No, You're not the same 1up.

So, soon after posting my last entry, I decided that the best way to show my support and love for the dozens of my co-workers laid off yesterday was not to scribble on my blog, but to actually be there with them.

I rode my bike from EA up to San Francisco, where a lively and active and drunken wake was in progress at Steff's Bar, the dive bar next to the (now former) Ziff Davis offices that has served as the go-to watering hole for years now. Some of those fired--like my good friends Ryan and Anthony--were not there, and knowing both those guys, I'm sure that hanging at a bar was about the last thing they felt like doing, knowing that they no longer held the jobs that they loved so dearly. But mostly everyone was there--both the fired (who were unceremoniously shoved out the door, with security guards present) and the "saved"--as well as a bevy of alumni who also came to show their support: Karen Chu, John Davison, Dana Jongewaard, Demian Linn, and many more. It's the one thing about Ziff Davis. No matter how fucked up and ill-managed of a company it was---and, boy, was it--they always managed to hire great people who stick together even years after their departure. Alumni of that company always feel the same bond. Maybe because it was so fucked up and ill-managed. Those who get out are kind of like ex-convicts--survivors who laugh and shake their heads at their former incarceration and feel for those left behind. Or maybe that's too dramatic and unfair. It's hard to say when it comes to something like layoffs. Emotions run high.

Which is why, after getting home from the wake, I got extremely upset when I read Sam Kennedy's "1up is Now Part of UGO" blog entry--which I'm not going to link to here because it doesn't deserve any more clicks. Now, Sam is an incredibly nice guy, one of those guys who never, ever has a bad word to say about anyone. He'd never write, for example, what I'm about to write. And there is no doubt in my mind that he's as bummed out as everyone else. He's in a horrid position here, having to put a brave face on what is an unequivocally ugly mess. So I wish no ill-will on the guy, and, more important, those following this story need to know that none of this is his "fault". All this shit happened way above him. He's just trying to make the best of a bad situation. And to that I offer him a heartfelt and sincere good luck.

Still. That blog post? Not a good call. It reminds me a bit of George Bush, to be honest, in its tin-eared, feel-good myopic offensiveness ("You're doing a heckuva job, Brownie!"). Yeah, he had to say *something*, but this wasn't the way to say it--not in public. I only want to comment on two lines:

"We’re still the same 1UP, and we’ll still be producing the same content...we always have"

Well, no, you're not, and no, you won't. You're not the same 1UP because you just lost a gigantic chunk of what made 1up 1up. It may go on, it may in fact produce great things, but it won't be the same. All that a company ever is is a mix of specific personalities. That's all it is. Period. When you remove people, it may go on, but it's never "the same." Saying it's the same is a disservice to all the people who just got canned. And, no, you won't be "producing the same content" because those responsible for some of the most popular and distinctive content--the 1up Show, the podcasts--no longer work there anymore. So, again, you can't say it's "the same". It's not. (And since everyone on the Copy Desk got canned, too, it won't be as well-edited, either.) Better to just acknowledge that, since we all know it anyway.

"...having the support of UGO and Hearst is probably the best bit of news we've ever had."

Again, no. If this can be called "the best news", I'd hate to see the bad news. In fact, it might be the best bit of news that you and the others who kept their jobs ever had, since you now don't have to be looking for work at the start of a new year, in the worst economic climate this country has been in in the last 80 years. For everyone else--both those who lost their jobs and those who followed their work--it's just about the worst news possible. I'll give you an alternate choice for "the best bit of news" 1up.com ever had: The fact that so many talented, creative, funny, dedicated people busted their ass at that site to produce content they believed in, despite the fact that they were chronically underpaid, chronically under-appreciated and lied to by an incompetent upper management (I mean the New York suits) whose shitty decisions led the company to ruin, and chronically treated--ever since the Ziff family sold the once-great company--like nothing more than numbers on a bleeding-red-ink spreadsheet. That's the best news you ever had. What happened yesterday? Yeah. Not so much.

In the cold light of day, though, another truth remains: All those still at 1up are still great writers and editors, and will, in fact, produce great things. You cannot underestimate the talents of Jeremy Parish, Thierry Nguyen, Scott Sharkey, and everyone else, and they deserve our support. I'm glad for all those who survived the cut, and will continue to read their work. And I wish Sam all the best over this difficult time of transition.

But since he's obviously hamstrung by having to put a happy face on this bloodbath, I'll just say what would have been nice to read, instead: "Our website is decimated. Our new owners failed to recognize the talent we had, which comes as no surprise since their own website values lowest-common-denominator pandering over quality content. We will do our best to do what we can, despite the fact that they gutted us. This fucking sucks."

/end rant.

Good luck, all. Those now looking for a job, you know where to find me for references, advice, and beer.

--Jeff

Man, what awful news. This makes me want to stop listening to podcasts. Every time this happens, I feel like one of my friends just died or some era of my life has just come to an end (and it's been happening a lot lately).

I'll miss those guys.

:) Jeff This is why I respect you and admire you :)

Your not just out for blood like simon made it seem.

You clearly made a point not to make it seeem like it.

your the best jeff :)

Right now there is this ungodly (or man-godly?) amount of raw talent floating about, Just waiting to get snapped up, disbursed, kicked to the winds. And sadly, that translates to "watered down" and like booze, watered down is bad. Evil even.

So, I have this idea, and I bet it has occurred to a few people in the last 48+ hours. Why don't they band together? Start their own website.
They have all the talent. Designers, web developers, copy editors. And the writers, oh, they have the writers. They just need a name and a place to cook.

They have the industry contacts, the community support. If they build it, the ad dollars will come.

Web hosting isn't difficult or that expensive these days. You don't really need a "studio" to record a podcast. Skype is your friend, just ask Leo (twit.tv) all you need is a headset. If they tell digg, reddit, joystiq and kotaku where they are, people will flock.

I think it is a good idea, and I wish I had the means to make it happen. As it is I’m not even in the same hemisphere, let alone country or state as the fallen. But maybe you could disseminate this message, to the broken family. Let them think about the possibilities. Hell it may not be something that will pay off tomorrow...but it could be magic.

And, sadly, the podcasts and video shows didn't have ads. They took time and money to produce and no one took the time to figure out either how to monetize them or how to integrate the podcast/video content with the bread and butter, ad supported written content.

After a couple of years one comes to view you guys as ones' friends. At least I do. When I heard the news I was upset in the same way that I was at the last day of middle school; sure you're gonna see some of these people here and there again but it wont ever be the same. To say so is to lie. The same was true when you and Shawn left as well (especially since I personally liked your content the most) but now its just so much.

Shit, best of luck to everyone; I have to wish it here as 1up.com wont have me and I haven't bothered to contact any admins about it.

Damn, I know this is just another comment to the hundreds you've already received. But I just wanted to say that I love you man. I'm glad you called out Sam because even though he may had to put on the corporate face for a second it doesn't mean it had to be the same day or worded the way he put it. 1UP will never be the same.

Pretty much agree with everything you said. Course it's gonna be a little harder for him since he has to stay and try to get along with the people who bought them.

At the same time though, a little bit of sympathy for the people let go and a realization that this was indeed a big blow to 1up would have been nice, instead of trying to sugarcoat it.

Anyhoo, I'd also like to invite allayou guys to this mini-blog I jsut made, where we can all share memories of the 1up podcasts and link up to tributes people have made for them.

So how is Ryan Scott doing anyhow?

Has anybody heard anything?

He was always fairly terse when it came to communicating with the 1up readership via his blog - but his last blog entry was just one sentence?

Was he literally being rushed out the door, or was he just plain despondent?

Ryan, if you're reading this, then know that many of us are rooting for you, and that we hope to see you appear somewhere else on the net.

The Goose.

[And, Jeff, in a completely unrelated note, and perhaps to help steer things back towards gaming (although I'm sure you're not really in the mood to be discussing gaming just yet) I'm hoping that in a future blog you'll give us your thoughts on The Sims 3. Personally, I'm more excited about Dragon Age than I am about The Sims 3 - but nevertheless The Sims 3 is an important release and it would be cool to read what you think about it. I can't believe that in the first three months of this year we're getting The Sims 3, Empire: Total War, FEAR 2, and Dragon Age - what an amazing start to the year for PC gaming. This could end up being one of the best years ever. Ironic, in a way.]

I agree with most things said here. 1UP podcasts have helped me through many a long, boring day's work. I am now rapidly trying to download all the 1UP audio content I can in case it gets taken down.

I send my support to all the people affected by the take over. I'm personally hoping for a new site to be set up consisting of former ZD employees (a la Giant Bomb), although this may be a farfetched wish. Failing that, I wish the best of luck to all the laid off in finding new, exciting places of work.

If I had the money I would hire you.

Thanks for your post Jeff. I couldn't be more bummed to hear about all this. Hopefully the grapevine will tell us where everyone ends up. 1up Show was so much better than anything else in games journalism and it's so sad to see it go!

Thanks again Jeff, for helping make sense of everything.

Very sad news; I really enjoyed the 1up podcasts. The best to the people who were laid off :/

Anonymous said...

Look Jeff, I really love your work, and really am a massive fan. I enjoyed CGW/GFW (was a reader of both PCG and CGW since back in the day), and I loved the podcasts you guys did. No, I didn't always agree with you, but that doesn't mean I didn't respect you. You were – and still are – in my eyes, one of the top dogs of video games journalism.

Having said that, I have to say, I honestly can't imagine how differently you yourself would have done things in a similar position. I remember when CGW was rebranded to GFW, you put a massive spin on it despite being under obvious pain. Then, I remember when GFW went online only, and again you put a massive spin on it – which came off as ridiculous, but we, your fans, understood.

Yes, Sam Kennedy’s comments came off as extremely insensitive, but at the same time, I haven't seen anyone else in similar positions do much better.

Finally, I have to say, your friendship with these people is definitely clouding your judgment. I think UGO probably made a wise business decision, which is to get rid of all the redundant positions at 1UP. These people are your friends, and in these harsh economic times, there is no doubt you feel extremely saddened by their situation, but come on, there is no way in hell… no way in hell… you would have given ninety nine percent of these writers a job at your magazine back in the day…

Yes, they were a highly entertaining bunch of ass clowns when it came to podcasts, but their level of writing was so poor, that they made IGN look like a bunch of English professors. Yes, really. If only I had a dollar for every time a 1UP editor said something along the lines of, “Oh, I really don’t like this game… but I don’t know why!”

You are supposed to know, you dumb fuck. That’s your job!

In fact, it wasn’t just their writing; when podcasting, most of these people even found it difficult to articulate and organize thoughts into spoken words without resorting to clichés, street language etc. With minds as developed as that, it wasn’t surprising when their work was so poor.

So who knows, maybe UGO can bring about some positive changes. Until now, 1UP have been widely mocked across the net, and have gained very little respect aside from what was earned by the print mag. guys.

I know these comments are going to upset a lot of people, but really, how many people actually visit the 1UP site to read content? Most of the community openly admits to visiting only the forums, and listening to the podcasts. In fact, the last time I asked the question on the forums, most people jokingly replied with, “What? 1UP does written content?”

Anonymous said...

Ya know, this comment above isn't entirely out of line.

There were certain individuals at 1up... and I'm not going to name names here... whose contributions were pretty damned sophomoric.

There were times when I wondered how in the hell these guys actually got jobs there?

I don't agree with everything the above poster is saying... but, yeah, some of it is true.

Without the podcasts and to a lesser extent EGM there is no 1UP. You are dead on. I ride my bike to work 1 and half hours each way and GFW Radio, 1UP FM, EGM Live, 1Up Yours, and especially Retronauts have been very much appreciated companions on the cold dark rides through the san fernando valley. I really don't see the value in laying everyone off who made 1Up what it was. It's pretty obvious that it's just going to be a UGO rebranding.

The only silver lining is that Jeremy Parish might be able to continue retronauts, but without the occasional contributions of some of the other 1Up personalities, I feel that even my favorite podcast may suffer.

Anonymous said...

Holy cow.

You mean to say that the people who create these blogs are allowed to delete the comments? I did not know that.

Hmm, I might have to think about getting me one of these blog spots. Except that my life is incredibly boring and there's not much to write about. There's nothing to write about! (I played Spore last night though and created a creature based on George Bush - that was kind of interesting.)

I mean, that's one of the things I've really gotten out of Greenspeak, and a few other blogs... it's that my life, in comparison with other people's lives, is just plain lacking in excitement.

I also agree with Jeff in being critical of certain individuals for hiding behind the Anonymous thing. People need to man up and at least post under a good user name: WabeWalker, Waldo, Bill Clinton, and The Moose are all presently available for that... heh heh heh.

Oddly being both Chinese and English if racial and cultural profiling means anything I might of been able to run it. Having read Sams blog post it just seemed to ignore what had just happened to 1up. I must admit it was a whole lot better than the quote on 1up from J Moses, CEO of UGO Entertainment. "The acquisition of 1UP, with its authentic voice, tenured editorial personalities and bustling user community, allows us to expand our base of quality content and represents a major step forward in UGO's mission to become the leader in the games space." What they seem to have done was to rip the vocal cords out of 1up by firing many of its "tenured editorial personalities" and alienated a good deal of its "bustling user community".

Elsewhere there has been criticism of your comments, which inspired me to come here and emphasize how important it is that what you wrote was said.

Not only because it needed to be said, but because ignoring reality is almost always bad in the long term.

Cognitive dissidence left my mind reeling in the wake of the 1up announcements, and it was only after reading your blogpost that I was able to find any silver lining at all. Which is simply:

1) 1up is dead.

2) But UGO did hire on a fraction of the previous staff to create a nice little upstart site with some great writers.

#2 only works when the full impact of 1up being dead is absorbed. It’s an illusion to conceive of it as the same site.

So thank you for acknowledging reality.

You make a great point which leads me to wonder. If they've eviscerated everything that made 1UP, 1UP, why bother continuing the brand? Just move it's userbase and holdover employees to UGO.

At this point, given how much damage the hatchet did, it doesn't make sense to "reinvent" it. The fans know better.

Wow, I'm kind of surprised that so many people are being so critical of UGO here.

For example, the poster above said that UGO are 'scumbag criminals' - really? And why is that? Because they laid off half the 1up staff?

Hey, guy, by my count there were dozens of 1up staffers let go - do you know how much money it costs to pay writers to write? We're looking at a pretty substantial payroll there. Did it ever cross your mind that Hearst can't afford to pay all those writers? Did it ever cross your mind to think that the 1up staffers who have remained are there BECAUSE OF HEARST?

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to turn a profit in publishing? Publishing, online or off, is an extremely volatile business - to say the least. Writers and editors know full well, going in, that Job safety in publishing is virtually unheard of.

Do I feel bad for people like Ryan Scott?

You bet I do.

But there's the possibility here that Ziff Davis Media was, eventually, going to pull the plug on the entire operation and fire everyone.

That Hearst has stepped in and kept half of the 1up staff is indicative that they were happy with the direction 1up was heading in - and if Hearst is brining in its own people to supplement the 1up staffers who have remained then that's indicative that they're loyal to their own people too.

How would you like it if the company you worked for bought another company and then fired you but retained the employees of the new company? You'd say that your company was disloyal to you of course.

Why do people always think that money grows on trees?

As Jeff has rightly pointed out, he knows much more about this situation than anyone here does. Personally, I can only speculate. But that's the whole point. If you don't have all the facts at your fingertips then it's best not to write something along the lines of 'UGO are scumbag criminals'.

It could very well be the case that the remaining people at 1up owe their jobs to Hearst.

Personally, I would rather have a job in publishing than be working at the local grocery store. That's the funny thing about publishing, it actually is a business, and you actually do have to generate a profit - incredible, I know.

The Goose.

UGO's intent was clear the minute they posted their idiotic release about how they were going to "dominate" E3 this year. That's about as awesome as Cosmo Kramer bragging about dominating 8 year olds in his karate class. Since when is journalism about "domination"? Domination of a half dead trade show, no less. Boy, that's confidence inspiring.

UGO bought 1UP's traffic and image. They don't give a fuck about 1UP's content, the list of who got the axe makes that clear. UGO is going to reduce 1UP to Digg fodder "Top 10 Biggest Tits" lists and worse.

The fact is that the last few idealistic holdouts in the industry are falling prey to the truth that quality does not equal success. People don't want good stuff, they don't want to be engaged. They want to tip back a big, greasy vat of shit and gobble it down. "Unscripted" reality shows dominate TV. Uninspired sequels dominate film. In the gaming world, we've seen EA go through a metamorphosis: from a hated shovelware factory to a company that remembered the values that made them such a powerhouse in the first place: quality games. It was like Trip Hawkins had returned.

But what is EA's reward for this dramatic, positive reinvention? Higher review scores, lower sales, and then layoffs.

Meanwhile, Activision thrives. Even without the WoW juggernaut in the equation they're doing all right.

The market has spoken. The market craves poop.

So maybe UGO is right. Maybe it is all about the "Top 10 Camel Toes in Gaming" lists, and that's the best that we can hope for. That is probably the price of going from niche to mainstream. Companies become massive and in order to support their own bulk, the shoot for the lowest common denominator.

I hope the good and talented people who are still at 1UP can reconcile that, because they need their jobs. Especially right now.

Just saying thanks for not being afraid to speak your mind.

I like Sam Kennedy a lot, but it feels like his blog post marked the beginning of the corporate take over. Put on your fucking smile and tell everyone that things couldn't be better. Bullshit.

Killroycantkill said...

It's nice to hear some well thought out words rather than the ZOMG teh 1ups = gayz now.

When I read the Sam Kennedy post I couldn't help but feel upset about what was said but I realised he is hurting to and it has to even hurt more for him to lie about his feelings in his blog post.

Also your right. 1up won't be the same and this is like someone stuck a sword in the site and is slowly pushing it up trying to carve it in half. If UGO is as bad as I think they are then the 1up staff needs to work at not having the site become "Top 10 Boobies in Video Games" type of site like T-Frog said. But hopefully things don't turn out the way I think it will and the reamining staff can take this husk of a company and so something with it.

jeff,

remember your youth when you wanted to be a rebel and stick it to the man (I know you still do because your young in the heart etcetera etcetera...)

what I was trying to say is join rebel FM for an episode when ryan scott is on.

"I was there for 17 years. I'm not a kid.

All I objected to was the words. I felt the tone of that blog post was a disservice to what had just happened. That's all."

Oh no, I think your points were valid, and I felt you put on the softest gloves possible before you told Sam what he needed to hear.

When I said "others wouldn't have done things differently", I meant in terms of trying to put a positive spin on the UGO takeover. But I still find it hard to believe he was so insensitive towards his coworkers.

I realize you understand the harsh realities of the business far better than we do -- obviously. I was actually just thinking out loud, plus, I wanted to express how I found you and a lot of the other excellent writers and thinkers there, to be a very odd fit with everyone else at 1UP.

By the way, I found the recent GWJ podcast -- where you and Shawn Elliot guest spotted --, to be one of the best in recent memory. It was highly entertaining, especially with the insider knowledge and all. There were plenty of moments in that podcast where I was thinking, “Wow, I can’t believe Jeff Green just said that!” From the podcast, it sounded like The Sims 3 had some unfixable flaws. I also found it hilarious how the developers cared so much about the damn score, rather than the actual review. I guess they are like most other people on the net.

Anyway, after I finished with the podcast, I immediately wanted to tell you something, and I guess this is as good a place as any. Firstly, I realize that I have no idea as to what you are and aren’t allowed to say, and I don’t mean to sound like some pretentious internet dude or something. But, as much as I loved that podcast, and enjoyed all the little EA anecdotes and stuff, I just hope you didn’t get into any trouble or anything.

You obviously have a better grasp of your situation than any of us ever would, and again, I feel silly for sounding like I am trying to advise you, but as a fan who cares, I just want you to be careful. :)

Everything that anonymous says is so dramatic and flamboyant. It just makes me want to set myself on fire.

I had no idea the UGO buyout meant so many people got laid off. I didn't often read the editor blogs, other than the GFW crew blog, so missed a lot of the discussion on it. After reading Scooters blog, the list of casualties represented 90% of the reason I ever went to 1up.com

It was a huge blow when you and Shawn Elliot left, GFW with it's cast at the time being easily my favourite podcast. This effectively puts the nail in the coffin for every podcast I've ever listened to.

Best of luck to everyone affected. I haven't had a chance to listen to it, but a lot of ex-1uppers have put together a podcast called RebelFM, if you were a fan of 1up it might b worth checking out.

1UP was my outlet into the gaming community, the entire community was awesome, with the podcasts making me feel in touch, even when I wasn't, anyway, this probably isn't the place, but your post was so honest, Jeff Green at his finest, when you left 1UP, the pain was bearable, but this, this is a whole new league of pain, all I can do is wish them all the best in the future, and hope that I get to see them again, through whatever media, selfish of me, but its not the podcasts/reviews/gaming news i'm going to miss, its the people.

YIKES! Or maybe FIDDLESTICKS! (Ok, what was going through my head was much worse than that, but I figure that I ought to censor myself a bit.)

Granted, after CGW (still can
t call it the `new' name) closed shop and you, Sean, and Shawn left, things really weren't the same, but this really puts the nail in the coffin... and what incredibly crappy timing for this sort of announcement.

What's crazy is that I saw this news right after reading some rumor about EA having more layoffs in March, which made me think of you! I wish the best for all those that were laid off, and hope that things are good at your piece of EA. While I'm not a really Sims guy anymore, I did drop a bunch of money into EA's lap with Rock Band 2 and accessories this Christmas.

I will miss the 1up "magic" that you wrote of and I am pained to see such an interesting group disbanded. I have great memories of the various podcasts and articles. For some reason your post reminds me of the last scene in Kurosawa's Seven Samurai and well, you are the flag calling it like it is and remembering what it was. Thanks!

it's a bummer, but it's business. before anything means anything when it comes to running video game websites and being in the gaming media, it's still just a means of making people money. it's difficult to accept that something you invest so much time, energy and love into is deemed unprofitable especially when it means so much to so many people, but in the end 1up and EGM weren't good business returns and this was something that could be easily seen from way off.

so to rip sam for posting a spin doctored blog meant to put a good face on a terrible position is, in the end, a misguided expression. no one ever questioned your motives for peacing out to work for EA at a time when a lot of readers were wondering what was to become of 1up when CGW was shut down. you did what was best for you and your family and that is to be respected. right now sam is still working for 1up and he will be one of the few who has to put humpty dumpty back together again, and while it may not be the same 1up to you, it's not fair to criticize him for what is essentially his decision to do what is best for him and his family while he is still an editor at 1up.

are you smoking crack? he didnt do this. he criticized the tone of a stupid message from Sam thats all.

Blog was 100% spot on when it comes to how I feel about UGO, Sam's post, and the future of the once great 1up.com.I couldn't believe the news when I found out my favorite magazine was dead, and my favorite website would never be the same. For me 1up no longer exists, you can't take away such a large portion of the people that made the site, and all the regular content so great then act like nothing has changed. It's ridiculous, and very fucked up.Ziff Davis, and UGO can fuck off.

As for those who are no longer a part of 1up I hope they come back with a new site or atleast some form of content.I payed attention to eveything 1up had to offer because of the personalities involved, there was a connection between the staff, and the fans that really made the site worth something. Now that that connection is gone it just doesn't seem like it's worth following anymore.

It always seemed to me like you guys were living the dream.Though you may not have had a whole lot of time to actually play the games themselves you got to meet, and talk to some of the biggest names in gaming.I would have given anything to be in that position.

I really appreciate what you wrote Jeff. This is the "truth" blog I've been hoping to read from someone with some credit from 1up. I too was very offended by what Sam wrote even knowing the hard position he's in. I'm glad someone respectable called him on it. It makes me feel a bit relieved that this isn't going to be totally whitewashed away as a hard but "good" thing as many of the fired and remaining employees feel they need to tip toe out in all their blogs and public statements. Kudos to you Jeff. I realize that this must have been a hard blog to write as some will see it as a direct attack at Sam for selling out. But I understand that's not what you were trying to do. He just made a couple of bad statements. I still believe that he is a guy with a lot of journalistic integrity, but agree that what he said was really insulting to the EGM/1up legacy. Thank you so much for this blog Jeff. I personally now feel like I can start to come to turns with this tragedy as I just needed to hear vocalized some real anger at what has occurred. As a EGM/1up reader since the 1989 Video Game Buyers guide I am devastated. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Thanks for this "rant", you've put to text what we all was thinking.
I've been reading EGM since the beginning of 1990's, even though I'm from Sweden where the import mag costs around $15, but it was worth every little dime. Now around 20 years later i really brings a tear to my eye to see that all is lost, well almost all. After you left i was thinking "well, Shawn is still there", so after Shawn left i thought "Skip, Fitch, Jason Wilson, Nick, Phil, Matt C, Ryan, Ryan Scott, Jay, Jason, Shane, Milk, Greg, Giancarlo, Mo, Rosie, Donahoe, Rey, Curtis, Justin, Michael G, Rob, Cesar, Matt Shirk and Anthony will still be there", now i´m just thinking "hope they can send a coffee mug to replace my subscription of EGM".

Anyhoo, l will still support the guys still at 1UP, they are not to blame, and I'll be reading your and Shawn's bloggs.

I think I'm not the only one that would like to ask you a big one. Could you, if you here anything about "Skip, Fitch, Jason Wilson, Nick, Phil, Matt C, Ryan, Ryan Scott, Jay, Jason, Shane, Milk, Greg, Giancarlo, Mo, Rosie, Donahoe, Rey, Curtis, Justin, Michael G, Rob, Cesar, Matt Shirk and Anthony", could you please write something on your blogg so we know where to go for our fix of pre 1UPers ^_^

Keep cool.

Seriously though I didn't even know what to think when I heard 1UP was gone....you and Shane were pure gold on the podcast, and now even Shane is gone, not to mention all the talented and dedicated people who worked for Ziff. My heart goes out to all your friends. Keep fighting the good fight Mr. Green.

I'm amazed, I must say. Seldom do I come across a blog that's equally educative and engaging, and let me tell you, you've hit the nail on the head. The issue is something too few folks are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy I came across this in my hunt for something relating to this.
