Dear 1up.com,

Please please please re-invest in a copy editor.

That way I don't have to be embarrassed by my alma mater for such embarrassments as this.

"Bruce Kelley??"

Good god.

UPDATE: The error has now been fixed. Internet ridicule FTW.

That is just hilarious...

people still read 1up?

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry
Mega64 should make a sequel about the UGO guy walking the dead dog in a park, and everybody is like omg wtf.. And hes like, what? What are you guys looking at? I’m just walking my dog.

It still says "employees had been >>their<< since" instead of "there" though.

Hahah. Nice.

I remember how much I hated the occasional copy-edit error or layout flub when reading Die Hard Game Fan or Gamer's Republic back in the day. Dave Halverson (Dog-bless him) has always had some of the most sleek mags in the biz. But seeing a fragmented caption or improper use of "their" was like seeing the girl of your dreams and being distracted by her massive pimple.

Well, now that that article has gotten a few extra clicks because of your blog post, maybe they can afford one? :D

1up sucking, what else is new?

You should take your chump change, buy 1up, and turn it back into it's once glorious self. And put GFW, or even better rename it back to CGW, back into print.

It would be great to see Mr. Geoff Keen back at the helm again!

You internet bully.

Jeff Green said...

I am a bit of a bully. :) But as I said on Quarter to Three, I don't blame the writer...or, that is, *you*, if this is actually you. :)

You need a copy editor. That's all. It's an innocent mistake...but that's why copy editors are indispensable.

Gunsakimbo said...

Why you gotta be like that Jeff? The only thing worse than lame copy edit is when a geek flamewar starts up about it.

Alice Liang said...

Jeff! To be fair, news never went through copy desk, even back when we had one... though the ever useful and awesome Jason Wilson oftentimes would make sure to read as much of the site as his workload would allow. It's just that print was much more of a priority, and time issues, and all that etcetc.

1UP operates a bit like a co-op now -- everyone pitches in reading stuff, and the more eyes, the more errors we find. It's the weekend, though, so...:<

Not making excuses, just giving context :) I would love to have copy editors again, though! Oh, would I ever...

Anonymous said...

whats the error there? i dont see it. who even cares its only 1up, not like anybdy ever even goes there anyways.

why dont u writer a real blog instead of just writing bad things about your former place of employment, then instead of taking pots shots at people from afar we can read something good from u.

Peace out, the goose.

Jeff Green said...

"why dont u writer a real blog instead of just writing bad things about your former place of employment, then instead of taking pots shots at people from afar we can read something good from u."

Sorry if the post bothered you. (And I'm assuming your bad English here is some kind of meta joke.)

I get no kicks out of taking potshots at my old place of employment. These guys know (I hope) that I love them. Which is why I care, and why I get angry when I perceive a slip in quality. However, as Alice says...given that it was a weekend, I can lighten up, perhaps. And if news didn't go thru copy edit back in the day....well, it SHOULD have. :)

Signal to Noise said...

Don't worry about it, Jeff. It's just all those Elvis Costello songs turning you into a bitter old man.

;-)

Alice said...

Of course it SHOULD have! Just like we should have had more cake versus pie readings. CAN we have more cake versus pie readings? :)

This coming from a guy too scared to put who he really is. Atleast Jeff isn't afraid of stating his own opinions, or standing behind them.

and whats a copy editor?

By the way, since we're all being 'internet bullies' here, I think I should point out that 'atleast' isn't a single word. There should be a space in there. Maybe one of these so-called copy editors would've caught that?

Also, is anybody else hoping that Jeff will write something about The Academy Awards - 'cause I sure am. That guy goes to see an awful lot of movies, and he's written some pretty interesting stuff about them. All I'm going to say is that I hope Mickey Rourke doesn't win. I'm not an admirer of that guy. Like, at all. Sean Penn, on the other hand, is, in my opinion, my generation's greatest actor, and I'd really love to see him win another Oscar.

Not too sure about this new host guy, though. Hugh Jackman or something? Never heard of him.

Bring back Billy Crystal or Steve Martin, I say - they were the best.

Jeff Green said...

I thought Mickey Rourke was great. But I don't see him winning. It's gonna be Sean Penn. And the only way Slumdog Millionaire doesn't win is if Milk pulls out the late upset. But I'm rooting for Slumdog.

(Though I think we can all agree that the entire ceremony is a farce without Wall-E or Dark Knight nominated for best picture...)

Anonymous said...

Slumdog, eh?

Well, Jeff, you're lucky that you've got a wife to go to the movies with - I'm single, and most of my friends... correction, all of my friends, are married, meaning that, of course, they go to the movies with their families.

This means that I don't have anybody to go to the movies with... isn't that sad.

I tend to watch most of my films on DVD. I buy them used from the video store, then watch them in bed on my MacBook, with my MacBook resting on my chest - great way to fall asleep, that!

I'm looking forward to buying Slumdog, Milk, and the Nixon/Frost film.

I'm also looking forward to seeing Bill Maher's film Religulous. About five or six years ago I felt that the only person making any sense in America was Bill Maher. I became an admirer of his after watching his routine in a show called "I'm Swiss", a show which seemed to reflect what America was going through at the time (thank god that Obama was elected president - it was evidence that Americans still do know how to elect great leaders).

Of the three big nominations that TDK was snubbed, I think the biggest injustice was for Nolan as Best Director. I mean, how do the people who gave The Dark Knight *EIGHT* Oscar nominations not bother to nominate the guy who *made* those nominations possible with his direction for the film? It's a bit hypocritical and doesn't make any sense.

I agree about Wall-E and Dark Knight not being nominated. I'd give Best Picture to Wall-E purely based on its relevance to our times.

I love you, Jeff.

Anonymous said...

what was the original mistake?

Kevin said...

I was worried about the same thing when I saw all the copy editors were let go. News is one thing, but surely there were copy editors on the reviews, previews, and cover stories for 1up right?

Anonymous said...

Look, screw the copy editors.

They're overpaid idiots. They don't contribute anything creatively. They just sit there at the copy desk making fun of everyone else.

Have you ever worked at a copy desk - and I mean a REAL copy desk?

Children.

I'd rather go on a field trip with fourth graders. These guys carry straws in their shirt pockets and shoot paper boogers at their colleagues when their colleagues are trying to get work done.

Anonymous, the original mistake, I believe, was that the writer wrote Bruce Kelley instead of Bruce Shelley. But were there other mistakes in there as well? Looks like the piece was cleaned up a bit maybe?

This is why we have to use QFT when citing a quotation removed from the internet. Sometimes you'll catch a guy's mistake, but then he'll re-edit his stuff, and make YOU look like the idiot. Criss cross.

So the lesson of the day is always quote for truth, kids.

But don't you love the way Green can't stop being an editor. Even from a distance he still thinks he's in charge of the editorial process at 1up.

Nice pic Jeff - that was my reaction exactly. We were reading on the viewscreen and we just couldn't believe our eyes. Worf wanted to ready phasers but I ordered him to take it out on Wesley instead.

Oscars: Slumdog - overrated. And get your flamethrowers ready everyone: TDK - overrated. It was way too long and just not as good as the first one. If Heath hadn't died, it would've been much shorter - many of his scenes would've been snipped for time.

I didn't see Frost/Nixon or The Wrestler or whatever the other Best Picture one was (Doubt?), because I just couldn’t imagine any of them being better than Milk. Milk was outstanding - maybe the best movie I've seen in a theater since The Shawshank Redemption.

Anonymous said...

Remember in The Shawskank Redemption how they sat on the rooftop in the month of May (which is one damned fine month for outdoor detail), drinking Bohemian style beer.

Great movie, Shawshank.

I love the ending to that movie too.

... hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things... I hope that the Pacific Ocean will be as blue as it's been in my dreams... I hope that Andy will be there...

... I hope.

Derek said...

I would blame it on Wesley also. That guy is the worse character in the whole Star Trek series, I'm dead serious.

I didn't watch the Oscars, I don't feel like they're legit anymore. One could say they're the MTV Movie Awards for old artsy folk. I'm not saying something like The Hulk should be nominated, I'm saying to make it legit, they should consider good movies that have been released throughout ALL the year, not just September through December, I hate that so much.

Also, way late, but I hope new full blog posts by Mr. Green aren't dictated by individuals in the comment section. Blog posts should be about whatever he wants, individual curiosities are what the comment section is for.

Something like: "Hey Jeff how's the weather?" I don't actually want to know Jeff, it's friggin' cold here in Minneapolis MN, especially after a random heat wave that melted all of the snow.

Actually, looking back at my earlier post about copy editors, I realize that I was completely wrong -- I am in fact the one who is a childish idiot.

Or am I just being so ironically hip again that no one can tell what I genuinely mean and what I do not? Perhaps that's today's lesson -- you can't trust us Internet morans.

Who knows -- it's hard to tell when you're douche-y like me...

Hey, you up there.

Don't steal my name.

I post The Goose after what I write to identify myself. Why don't you identify YOURSELF... a guy who hides behind a false name is nothing but a big sissy in my books, and... wait a minute... was that Robert Coffey who wrote that?

Anonymous said...

Mitch Tanner,

You're telling me that I'll be sorry?

No way, guy, YOU'LL be sorry - sorry for tellin' me what to write and what not to write.

You think I'm afraid of you - guy, I was in The Marines, and fought at Bazra during the first Persian Gulf War - and I've got a commemorative tattoo to prove it too. You say you'll hunt me down... no way, guy, I'll hunt YOU down. And when I've finished hunting you then I'll hunt your family as well. Then I'll find your family archives and obliterate all traces of your ancestral heritage.

I've already looked up your I.P. number, and I'm en route to your home even as we speak - go watch the film No Country For Old Men because it'll prepare you for the storm that's headed your way.

I make Anton Chigurh look like Ronald McDonald.

When the lights in your home go off, don't bother getting up to light a candle, because you'll be dead before you can say Dick Tracy.

WHERE'S YOUR NUMBER PAL? AT LEAST I HAVE THE FREAKIN COURAGE TO EVEN MAKE UP A FAKE NAME.

And trace my IP? What are you, 12? LOL. Its common knowledge nowadays how to use an IP changer so good luck.
