A sad day for all the folks at 1up.com, the vast majority of whom lost their jobs today. I'll try to post a longer blog about this--I've been in meetings the whole time the proverbial merde hit the fan--but this is just a quick note to say that my condolences go out to all those now looking for work. The list of people they decided to lay off is just crazy. Don't ask me to make any sense of it, because I don't see any.
R.I.P. 1up.com. They may keep your URL, there, but we all know better.

UGO ruined my day :(
I was hoping all the talk of layoffs where untrue, but I guess that was just wishful thinking.
Send them all our support. The restraining order they gave me said no direct contact.
I am so numb right now. I loved 1up...UGO has ruined my year.
It's only fitting that my word verification begins with 'ruin'
I would love to know the rationale for deciding who got to stay vs. who to can...
It's sad! And brings back bad memories (shudder...)
Ryan Scott's streak is still alive - every place he's ever left has been because the business closed up shop.
Jeff, do think that the people have been fired can leverage their experience to get gaming jobs despite the worldwide economic brainfart?
I knew things were bad (to a degree) but I never thought it would have been possible for it to end like this.
Rough times for sure, I just don't understand.
Was there any talk of some sort of acquisition while you still worked there? or can you not say?
This is a big fucking bummer, i just hope these guys get back on their feet ok, maybe Giant Bomb will scoop them up, that would pretty cool i think. sad day though...
also jeff you need to be on more podcasts.
I keep telling myself that I'm not responsible...
Sons of bitches.
I'm not saying you and Shawn planned this, but what timing, eh? I'm sure you both feel absolutely sick, as I'm sure everyone involved does. I was always the one laid off, not the one that stayed, so I'm not sure what someone like Garnett is feeling right now. But for those that are out, tomorrow truly is a better day. Much love.
As an aside, can't wait to read your longer thoughts on this Jeff. Is this the deathknell for the whole industry? Is it simply a sign of the times? Are videogames going the way of extreme sports? Ugh.
Its a real shame, there were a lot of good people let go.
This freakin' sucks. I've always wanted to go into the field, but god damn does it seems like it's a fruitless dream right now...
I'd love it if they pooled their talents and created a 100% independent video game news source. I know that takes money, though.
Poor Ryan and Anthony, but at least the Brodeo will live on in us all. Whether that is a good thing remains to be seen!
I think that Ugo has legitimately gotten rid of every single reason I had left to love 1up. It's pretty selfish to think about that I'm sure, but the podcasts and the articles were such a great source of information and entertainment for me.
I'm sure I'm not the only one since I've seen others post it, but the guys at 1up were the whole reason I actually decided to start writing in the first place. I got to meet some of the staff at E3 including a slightly awkward "why's this guy talking to us" style conversation with you and Shawn, and it was a really cool experience.
1up to me was kind of a dream team, and I suppose we as fans can consider ourselves lucky that it lasted as long as it did. It was sort of a magic time for gaming media. It seems like there are becoming less and less places now for the hardcore gamer to take refuge.
Yes, I'm aware that the above was just sort of a ramble and not a proper assemblage of coherent thought.
Please make a podcast. Please please please! Don't tell us that you are busy with "work" or whatever. We beseech thee! Put order back into our lives!
or not, whatever (play it cool... play it cool...)
Well said sir, 1up is dead, although tina still working there is good.
Jeff, no-one can say you didn't make the right move now.
If you can link to any other guys blogs you know I'd appreciate it.
Yeah, Jeff. Please hook us up with links from the guys' blogs...
Man...
Ryan Scott and Anthony...
Crap...
Jeff, you're like the Gandalf to our Fellowship.
When you get the chance, please give us some words of wisdom to make sense of it all.
I predicted something like this about a year ago. Financially the number just don't make sense. None of which makes it sting any less. Pouring one out for the 1upers. Some advice from somebody who has been through some rough patches: work hard, be creative, do what you love, and learn to value what's actually important and you'll get through. God(whichever one you choose even if he's made of spaghetti) Bless
It was bad enough with the loss of CGW/GFW and EGM magazines but to lose the Brodio, 1UP Yours and the 1UP Show?
Very saddened...
What boggles my mind the most is the fact that I doubt they could possibly come out well with this acquisition, because people went there because of the talent, not just the URL. What a sad day for all those people.
I'm stunned. God. Fucking. Dammit. I guess I'm not stunned, I'm pissed. 1Up had/s the best journalists and the best podcasts in the game industry.
Perhaps it's unrealistic, but I hope the guys and gals can pull together and still put together some podcasts. I'd pay cash money for a year subscription to Retronauts.
Whoa!
Not really unforeseen, but still a real blow for those who hung on in the hope that things might change, or were simply unable to find jobs elsewhere.
What's heartbreaking here - at least the way I see it - is that many of these people will be unable to find another job that's even remotely like the one they had at 1up.
Those of us who listened to the podcast will know that Shawn Elliott was unable to shake the memory of his time working at Safeway. I mean, that's the nightmare that people face after landing a great job, isn't it - that one day this amazing job will be taken away from them and that they'll have to return to their old job at Safeway, or wherever.
Ugh, and now I see that Ryan Scott has lost his job - wow, he must be incredibly low right now. Sure hope he finds something.
(Jeff, is there anything you can do about that? Ryan might need the help of an older guy with some contacts here? I mean, I'm sure he'll be able to get a job somewhere - but will it still be gaming related?)
God I hate seeing bad things happen to good people. What a crap way to start the year.
The Goose.
UGO seriously screwed themselves, me, everyone. This is good for nobody. Stupid stupid move!
That sux...
That whole acquisition went the complete opposite of what I was hoping for. I was about to send Ryan and the Lan Party crew some Green River soda too. Looks like they're in the 'laid off' boat like me. :( :( :(
I've been a member of 1UP for over four years now, and this news is just sickening. Good luck to all of the great guys and gals who were "let go" tonight.
1UP.com... URL only indeed.
Such terrible news. I hope everyone finds work.
Give them all a big hug for me, Mr. Green.
This is a sad sad day and the worst possible decission UGO could make. If i was in control there i´d fire the guy who made that decission. INSTANTLY.
Its (sad but) understandable that EGM gets closed, after all sooner or later that will happen to all magazines and the more they cater to tech aware readers, the earlier it will happen of course.
But to fire such a big part of the 1up staff essentially takes away the reason why people visit the page.
Honestly, getting the podcasts and watching the 1up show was the main reason i went there (and that because of the great staff and great content they made there) and once i was there i usually checked out more stuff.
What is the reasoning behind this? The only i can see is they essentially wanted to make 1up.com a walking dead thing. This sucks bigtime. If they don´t come to their senses i wish UGO nothing but bad things.
I hope the 1up guys can work together with giantbomb.com fellas or make their own site and just like it happened with giantbomb.com regarding gamespot show the stupid morons at the top who is the important side of this biz.
Damn you UGO.
UGO bought 1up for the name alone, since they laid off basically everyone. It's a sad day in videogames when both 1up and EGM cease to exist anymore. I wish the former 1upers the best, and hopefully they bounce back soon enough.
this totally ruined my day. UGO praises the personalities on 1Up and then lets most of them go. please send them all our support...hard time to lose your job too.
Sad news, Ziff had a talented crew from the days of GFW/EGM to 1up. Wish the best to those down on their luck in the not so best of financial times.
Hey Jeff, I have a suggestion: now that all of the original semi-original members of the Brodeo have moved on, how's about you guys get your skype headsets out and put on an independent podcast once a week? There have been enough contributors by this point to fill in for others in the case of schedule conflicts and I for one would pay a subscription fee to help with hosting. I bet a lot of others would as well.
Might be a stretch, man, but if anyone can get the band back together, it's you.
This is so fucked up. I still can not get my head around why you would buy 1up, and then get rid of the people and content that made it what it was. I'll never understand the logic of corperate dill holes.
They understand numbers but not people. Problem is that it's people that make the numbers what they are.
jeff! only you can fix this now. it is your time to act.. DO SOMETHING!!
1up was the last (large) bastion of content that I trusted and identified with. I'm really not happy that it's gone. There goes 6 hours a week of podcasts I'll have to fill.
Sucks so much. I will have nothing entertaining to listen to while I play WoW now.
Fuck UGO.
Damn. For a long, long time, I never bothered with these newfangled podcast things the youngsters always talked about. One day I succumbed and tried listening to one from 1Up. And then I was hooked. It truly is disheartening to know that it is all over. I wish all of the good people well in their new jobs.
I guess I won't be using 1up
anymore.
That about rounds out a shitty start to '09. The list of people they let go is completely ridiculous. They let great minds like Ryan Scott go, but they kept Tina and Alice? 1up is well and truly dead to me now. :(
*toasts to the 1up crew, and extends a middle finger in UGO's direction*
This makes me so sad.
I regularly make an eight hour round trip from the Twin Cities to my hometown and those four hours there and back were occupied with GFW and Legendary Thread and man, did those four hours in the car fly by.
I share disappointment with everyone here and wish the best for the 1up crew, past and present.
Also, I know that everyone is busy, but c'mon, how hard would it be to put together one podcast a month, an "Unofficial Games for Windows Podcast" with the old Brodeo crew via Skype or something. We know that Jeff, Shawn, and the otherguys miss the feedback and ego stroking of regular podcasting. You know we'd be there to stroke away :)
...anyway just dreaming...
Thanks again Jeff for making my car trips enjoyable and once again my condolences and best wishes to the 1up crew.
What a shame. My heart really goes out to the people who were laid off, as well as to those who are left to fill in their shoes.
I will especially miss the new PC podcast, as it was finding its legs and getting a good synergy going among the members. I will miss Anthony's commentary, Tina's unique view, Matt's analysis, Robert's laugh, and of course, Ryan's silence.
I had better go download all the old podcasts I've been meaning to before they're gone...
I can't see the logic in buying them if they are just going to fire everybody. The url means nothing. Maybe they just got rid of administrative people ?
Looks like you abandoned ship at just the right moment, Jeff. This is truly a bummer, I'm going to go drown in my misery tonight.
@Annie what are you talking about? They said so once on GFW radio that they pulled Ryan Scott right out of high school. Which would make his only place of employment cgw/gfw/1up.
Have you guys ever thought of doing a Brodeo podcast? Seriously, just once a week for about an hour, there will be plenty of people that will pay you good money to listen to it. I'm sure the hell one of them!
So if you guys do this, let me know.
I already miss listening to you and Shawn, now the rest of the 1up podcasts.
I would have thought a company would be a lot more careful when buying something as tenuous as an online brand.
It's not old media here, people can just decide to go elsewhere and your brand dries up.
Axing a lot of well respected/loved employees seems to be a fine way to remove any value the brand has.
Like you say, Jeff, it's just a url.
PS I miss the old GFW crew.
Ryan was just starting to really get into the flow of the LAN Party podcasts too...
Wow how could Hearst lay off so many genuinely talented individuals; people that personify the 1up brand and serve as the faces behind the name? It is almost like the person who performed due diligence on the acquisition knows nothing about gaming at all. They cut the fat, they cut the meat, they cut the bone, and they are left with only the marrow to wither.
I am sad for 1up and have serious reservations about what kind of content will be on the site moving forward since SO MANY of the people I regarded highly and had the most integrity were unceremoniously guillotined today. I will also miss the 1up yours podcast and the 1up show, as many others have stated. Those were shows that were incredibly entertaining and educational for me, and I anxiously awaited them every week. It is INCREDIBLE that anyone with business acumen would shut down a media program that has so many captive listeners/viewers for 2-3 hours per week - ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! That was an incredibly valuable asset that Heast FUBAR'd. Aren't they in the media business that relies on audience captivity and retention? Or maybe they're in the other media business that doesn't care about quality. You, Hearst, win the FAIL trophy for 2009.
Personally, I will discontinue my subscription to Hearst magazine Esquire since it's obviously for toolbags now anyway. I'll boycott everything Hearst that I can. wtf is UGO anyway.
Bow down to your new overlord: UGO!! =D
Jeff, EGM has died but not the editors.
Reform. Regroup! Or at least encourage the old staff to, considering that was the only gaming magazine I actually ever bothered to buy.
FUCK YOU UGO FOR MAKING SUCH A SHITTY BUSINESS DECISION!
This is just so sad. Immense respect and major condolences to my now-ex-1UP friends and colleagues.
Wowza, that's a kick in the balls and no mistake. Like many others have also suggested, a lot of the main reasons to visit 1up have just been tossed aside. Here's hoping they find some kind of unifying forces to help come up with something better (and profitable, natch)
This is a hard pill to swallow. Why buy 1up and lay everyone off? Do they really think anyone will go to the site anymore?
It feels like such a slap in the face.
You said it perfectly with just that Jeff. I wish the very best to everyone there.
I was heart broken when GFW died, and now this shit?
Where will they find employment?
Mate if I wasn't already loaded with business mergers right now and juggling so much bullshit I would definitely be all over getting the best of that talent over to a new site with some of my business partners backing the venture.
I already know quite a few european sites that are wishing some of that talent could move to europe.
I'll miss the 1up crew as they stood, they were a fantastic community of journalists and people to listen to about video games.
Hopefully they find work cause they deserve it for how awesome 1up truly was in the gaming community.
Be glad you got out when you did. I just hope everybody lands on their feet.
This is horrible. It's like I lost my online virtual home. My home was set on fire!! By effin' UGO!! Jeff....enlighten us a bit if you can on the situation when you get a chance :(
So UGO only wanted to buy 1UP to eliminate competition. A black day for gamers everywhere.
What I find saddest these days,is the fact that every magazine is just in a race to be the first to publish a copy & pasted list of bullet points provided by the developer to hype his game. The insane ramblings of Yahtzee are almost the most in depth analysis of the game and its mechanics people can get these days, even if they are covered beneath a layer of "I hate everything".
So hurray for another online waste of time publication such as UGO, where people won't get any advice on what to buy, but rather paraphrased advertisement and mediocre articles based on headlines that attract people with ADD.
UGO = Uber Gigantic Orifices
That is all.
i'm still in shock. this is so awful.
if i understand this correctly (i only just heard the news): 1UP basically no longer exists as it did in 2008 and EGM has finally been killed.
):
I'm looking forward to your view on this eff'ed up situation. I feel horrible. I cannot imagine how the folks at 1up feel, for both those who stay and those who are gone.
Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who's depressed by this. In a strange and creepy way, the 1up folks became my friends, and I'm devastated to see them lose their jobs, not to mention that I'll have to fill up so much empty podcasting space now.
A toast to the 1up network from Manila. !up is dead, long live 1up.
Maybe we will see a spread of brilliance across the gaming enthusiast press, with many of those laid off finding jobs in the various other output websites/magazines for gaming-related communication. This could be the start of a golden age, with the intellectual capacity of so many 1UP staff, GFW staff, EGM staff finding new homes to display their capabilities.
If that is not the future, I at least hope the best for them all.
Jeff I really do think that you would make a lot of people happy if you did an even semi regular skype podcast with some or all of the brodeo guys.
Seriously I would giggle and jump around like a giddy teenage girl.
And here I was, desperately waiting for another fantastic podcast to come out on 1UP only to find out that there probably won't be anymore. The layoffs are just terrible. Most of all the people who made 1UP what it...was, aren't ever there. Great job UGO...great..
Sad Faces...
I'm really speechless a what happen over at 1UP...that's the most insanity I've seen at one time.
@Klaus P.
Yahtzee isn't game reviews and analysis. It's pure entertainment. And it's hilarious.
(For those of you that don't know what we're talking about, go here).
For those of you looking for another quality podcast, go to Gamers With Jobs.
What are the chances of a Giant Bomb phoenix-out-of-the-ashes scenario. These guys strike me as too creative/intelligent to not want an outlet.
Regardless, thanks so much for all your output.
Horrible news. I wish everyone there the best of luck in the future.
This bums me out beyond belief. By far the best podcasts (yes, PLURAL) in the industry. I, like so many others, got really attached to these guys even though I've never met them. Terrible way to start the new year.
Yeah, exactly what that other guy said: 'in a strange and creepy way, the 1up people have become like my friends.'
Myself, I don't have any friends who are gamers. Most of my friends wouldn't be caught dead playing a video game. Correction. ALL of my friends are like that.
This was why the GFW podcast was such a big deal for me - it was the first time in my twenty years of gaming that I had ever heard a group of guys talking passionately about computer games.
I'd never had that in my life before - and it was absolutely wonderful.
CGW, in its printed form, served the same purpose. Johnny Wilson made me feel proud to be a gamer at a time when it wasn't cool to be one.
We, the readers and the listeners and the watchers, feel like we really know these people - they represent the friends that most of us don't have in our own friendship circles. And of course it really does pain us to see them being treated... unfairly.
You just feel bad for all of them.
The Goose.
I first read about this crap on your blog, Jeff.
1UP for me was the podcasts, which were the greatest I've listened to.
I'm so down right now. I can only imagine what the people actually involved feel.
This is very sad for all those 1UP employees who just had their lives turned upside down. I loved the podcasts and magazines and now they are all gone. I'll miss the people behind them all but I don't have to deal with the financial and emotional turmoil like they do. I can't begin to pretend I know what they are going through. I am glad Jeff and Shawn made it out in time but it's a shame more were not able or chose not to leave before the axe came down. Best of luck to all of you. I have faith that your talents will serve you well in the future.
Hamilton
Such sad news. 1up was one of the few bastions of quality games journalism which understood the difference between a review, and a critique (and which I could go to for either)
Sad to see it go, because it was the collective tallent, not the url that was the valuable item.
Old faces left, and we were sad, but new faces would arrive, and we would rejoice. This time there's no new faces to ease the loss.
I wish all those guys the best, and hope that they can keep that community alive somewhere else, because it surely isn't going to be at 1up any more.
I'd pay to subscribe to the continuation of the ex-1up family. These were like the best friends I never met (or talked to) which sounds weird and stalkery, but is really just the result of admiration on my part, and awesomeness of theirs.
I am of course including you on that last Jeff.
Thank you Ziff-Davis for running three great video game institutions into the ground (OPM, GFW/CGW and EGM).
This is the list of layoffs from:

Crap man, that looks suspiciously like a list of every name I recognised of the staff at 1up bar Alice and Tina.
What are they thinking?
I understand that layoffs were inevitable, but UGO decided to basically eviscerate that which made 1UP such a reliable and informative source of video game expertise.
UGO obviously could care less about the audience of 1UP who have come to trust and/or respect the opinions of the staffers.
I won't be returning to 1UP anymore. The soul is gone.
I really wish all the podcast people that had left and now that have been laid off would get together and do a podcast of their own. Maybe they could get enough ads to keep it going.
I've got nothing new to add to this conversation except to express my own sadness. I'm greatly disappointed to hear this, and wishes well to everyone affected.
Well, truthfully 1up wasn't the same latter of past year. Though, as I've been saying on other threads and sites, never fun when people losing their job because of company failures.
This has been a sad day for me, I have been a fan of the 1up gang for many years. I just hope each of the extremly individuals that were let go find new out lets that we can all enjoy. LONG LIVE 1UP AND CHUFF IT OUT GUYS
This sucks. 1UP was my favorite place for articles and podcasts. Dammit, there'd better be some sort of podcast that arises from the ashes of 1Up. PC Gamer (my last bastion of trusted information with the fall of 1UP) does their podcast over Skype. Please Jeff?
I don't wanna go to work today...
I have noticed over the past year or so that Ziff Davis screws over most of what they touch. EGM? Sure thing. PC Magazine? Assuredly. 1UP? Yeah, they pretty much threw it to the wolves. FileFront will be next. Just wait and see. Ziff Davis already killed the blog that was on there and I wager that pretty soon we will not be able to download demos, mods or videos anywhere without paying for it or be able to upload our files either because FileFront will be gone the way of the dodo. What is wrong with that company anyway? Do they exist just to kill the last bit of technology and gaming magazines we love so dearly for spite? I know that print magazines are in trouble, but it is much more comfortable reading one in bed or on the commode than balancing a laptop on your knees.
This is so depressing.
